Travelling with a group of fifteen Box Hill Institute students from Automotive, Building, Hospitality, Electrical & Refrigeration and ICT centres, the students completed a program with a focus on Canadian classes, industry and tourism activities and a complete orientation to Alberta, Canada.

Box Hill Institute offered scholarships to each of the participants to assist with their expenses for the exchange.

This is me at Lake Louise! The cheesy smile pretty much reflects my expression the whole time is was in Canada. I just had the best time of my life! But back to Lake Louise, Lake Louise is in the Banff National Park we stopped here for a photo op on our way to our accommodation in Banff. The colour of the water here cannot be expressed in a photo it is just the most magnificent blue. The informative plaque explains it better than I can “The glaciers here grind rock beneath them into a fine powder called rock powder. Meltwaters wash this powder into the lake. The resultant silty water absorbs all colours of incoming light except the striking turquoise and vivid blue that refects back into our eyes.” The water never reaches temperatures higher than 10ºC and during the winter freezes over and visitors can skate on the surface. Very magical I recommend not only Lake Louise but the whole experience to anybody who gets the opportunity. (Jessica)

Seeing Heritage Hall at SAIT Polytechnic through the trees in all its splendour, I really fell in love with the place. The teachers were so helpful and really put in an A1 effort to make sure our program was as jam packed and fun filled as possible. Then there were the students of SAIT! They were so friendly they made me feel very welcome with outings around town - the night life would not have been the same with out them. (Jessica)

As an electrical apprentice in Australia, the short exchange to Calgary was a great opportunity to see how electrical installations are carried out in Canada. While the fundamental aspects of the trade remain the same, there was a massive difference in the way the Canadians went about their commercial and domestic work.

Another aspect of Calgary that I noticed was the fantastic hospitality and friendliness of the Canadians. Along with the students at SAIT Polytechnic who were always happy to help, we were also looked after extremely well by the Electrical Department and the teachers. They put in a huge effort to ensure we had a great time and learned a lot about the electrical industry in Canada. (Michael)
