International visitors study, gain hands-on experience
By Cindy Petersen, KCC, 9 October 2008
Students from Australia and Singapore are visiting Kirkwood Community College this month, experiencing first hand the similarities and differences between cultures.
Their visit, which extends from Sept. 22 to Oct. 10, has been split between campus visits and sightseeing around the area. The students are also traveling to Chicago before returning home.
The visiting students are studying Web design, culinary arts and early childhood development.
Dawn Wood, international programs director, said, "This is wonderful for students from various cultures to interact and share their experiences with each other. Working with the Global Education Network (GEN), we are able to provide students with that opportunity."
The students had the opportunity to tour Brucemore and attend the University of Iowa Homecoming parade, as well as view Iowa's countryside. "We've been trying to keep the students busy when they aren't in class," said Wood. "We want them to be able to experience all they can while they're here."
They were also able to visit the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and saw pictures of the flood that devastated the area earlier this year.
"Seeing those pictures were a bit a shock," said Emma Freeman,
early childhood development. "When they told us that the area had been
flooded we had no idea what amount of damage had been done. It was very
intense," she said.
