October 7, 2010 –Aussies on ice may seem like a fish out of water, but nine exchange students and an instructor from down-under faired quite well at SAIT Arena yesterday.

GEN Project Management Programme 2010
Institute of Technical Education built on the success of SAIT Polytechnic’s Project Management short exchange in 2009 by hosting a high profile program in Project Management from 24 July – 16 August 2010 for students from all GEN partner colleges.
More than 30 students from all four GEN partners participated in the theory behind Project Management, and worked on group work projects based on the Youth Olympic Games, hosted concurrently in Singapore.
GEN participants had opportunities to
network across three continents
During the intensive 3 week training program, participating students gained strong knowledge and experience in Project Management that can be used in studies and in the work place.
Students took on the role of “events consultant” with a local events management company. Their team was tasked by ITE to organise the Community Celebrations at ITE College East on Sunday, 8 Aug 2010 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. At the Community Celebration site, the public were to enjoy performances and activities with thousands of others and witness the lighting of the community cauldron.
Extraordinary Exchange
What do the cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, Aspirin making and the Amazing Race have in common?
They are all part of a student exchange programme that ITE offered to a
group of six students from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
(SAIT) Polytechnic located in Calgary, Canada.
Inaugural GEN Coordinators Conference 2010
The first GEN (Operational) Coordinator’s meeting was held in Toronto in July 2010. Attended by representatives from each of the GEN colleges, the opportunity allowed GEN coordinators to have face -to-face collaboration on issues of student exchange arrangements, expectations and support services . With an agenda coordinated by Kirkwood Community College, the meeting allowed for discussion of operational guidelines, and common tools to assist with the implementation of exchanges. Academic calendars for the following year were examined and ways to streamline exchange activity identified. Participants were in unanimous agreement that collaboration at this level is an essential key to ongoing growth and success with the Global Education Network.
GEN Planning Conference 2009
The GEN Planning Conference was hosted by SAIT Polytechnic from June 29 - July 3, 2009 in the beautiful, scenic town of Banff, as well as in Calgary.
Participants represented Box Hill Institute, Melbourne, Australia, Kirkwood Community College, IA, USA, SAIT Polytechnic, Alberta, Canada, and Institute of Technical Education, Singapore.
Discussions during the conference concentrated on celebrating the milestones of GEN to date and planning future goals.
Delegates got the opportunity to see the sites of Banff and Canmore as well as a rousing visit to the world famous Calgary Stampede.

GEN Project Management Study Tour 2009
SAIT Polytechnic built on the success of Box Hill’s Project Management
troika offered last year by offering a similar course in Project Management
from May 18 – June 5, 2009.
Nineteen students and seven staff members from all four GEN partners participated
in the theory behind Project Management, as well as in group work projects
based on WorldSkills, which is being hosted in Calgary in September.
Participating students gained strong knowledge and experience in Project
Management that can be used in studies and in the work place. At the conclusion,
students were given an official SAIT transcript with their grade along with
a Certificate of Completion.

The GEN Planning Conference was hosted by Institute of Technical Education in Singapore, from 26 July to 2 August 2008.
Participants represented Box Hill Institute, Melbourne, Australia, Kirkwood Community College, IA, USA, SAIT Polytechnic, Alberta, Canada. and Institute of Technical Education, Singapore.
The program included a series of business planning activities and an opportunity to visit Institute of Technical Education. Colleges were provided with opportunities to meet management and faculty from various departments across the college.

GEN Troika Launched

The first GEN Project Management "Troika" program was held at Box Hill Institute in Melbourne, Australia in July 2008 with participants from each of the Global Education Network partner colleges in attendance.
The "Troika" concept is used to describe the partnership where three or more entities join together to work towards a common goal or belief - in this instance, to provide international training and learning experiences for our students and faculty.
Thirty four students and faculty from the four GEN partner colleges participated in the program. The aim of the program was to provide students with an understanding of the processes and practices that underpin project management and these can also be applied successfully to any task or job.
Students completed units from the Diploma of Project Management during the three week program. Faculty from participating colleges observed the classes and facilitated the action learning program components with BHI staff/faculty. Students had an opportunity to work collaboratively in a team with representatives from all the GEN partners.
At the conclusion of the program, students received a Certificate of Attainment for the Diploma of Project Management and Diploma of Frontline Management units completed. The program also offered opportunity for cultural and tourism visits, and incorporated relevant local industry visits.
Fashion Runway Ozzy Style

Institute of Technical Education and Box Hill Institute students met in July 2008 in Singapore to showcase their talents in the first GEN Fashion Runway event.
A collaborative initiative, the Fashion and Hairdressing students from BHI worked with the Events and Beauty Therapy students from ITE to showcase both denim and evening wear ranges of clothing designed by students in the Associate Degree in Fashion Technology at Box Hill Institute. The Fashion Runway was one of the events which made up ITE's Youth UnITE event.
Melbourne Visit for SAIT & KCC

Fourteen students and five staff from Kirkwood Community College and SAIT Polytechnic visited Box Hill Institute for a short exchange program in May 2008.
Students represented training areas of: Automotive, Architectural Drafting, Journalism, Business and Hospitality Management, and completed an academic program with industry visits incorporated. Students were also provided with opportunities to visit local tourism locations in both the Melbourne and outer metropolitan regions.
ITE Electrical Short Course

Students from Institute of Technical Education in Singapore have completed two short courses at Box Hill institute in July 2008. In two weeks the students from Electrical Engineering enrolled in the Open Registration for Customer Premises Cabling short course, and the Structured Cabling (Cat 5) training at Box Hill Institute.
Students received a certificate of participation and documentation from Box Hill Institute confirming satisfactory completion of training competencies.
New-look restaurant at BHI
Culinary and food and beverage students participating in student exchanges will now experience the newly refurbished training facility, Fountains Restaurant.
Open to the public, the restaurant provides a training environment for Box Hill Institute's hospitality students and is now one of the largest trainers of apprentice chefs in Australia.
The original restaurant first opened in 1982 and has now been redesigned to offer private and public dining spaces, extended bar facilities and new kitchen equipment.
Reflecting current hospitality industry practices, Fountains Restaurant has been updated with new uniforms, menus, stationery, and audiovisual equipment. A PDA ordering system will be trialled in 2007.
Meet Rory Cousland — new GEN exchange recruit
Rory Cousland is the newest BHI recruit to depart for a semester abroad exchange to SAIT Polytechnic (Canada).
Rory, an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems student, will commence classes on 8 January 2007 after attending the orientation program for students.
Rory will be packing his winter clothes to combat the cooler climate and is looking forward to living in and absorbing the Canadian culture.

Kirkwood Community College hosts Australian students
Box Hill Institute students spent three weeks in September and October 2006 at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa, USA, as part of the GEN exchange program.
Highlights from the program included a brief introduction to Chicago, Illinois, and a meal at Tru Restaurant. An opportunity to do some ice-carving rated highly, along with 'tailgating', spending time at the KCC campus, taking in some local sights such as the Mississippi River at Dubuque and meeting the local people of Cedar Rapids. Students also enjoyed exposure to local industry through visits arranged by the host college.
